FitBit Alta HR VS FitBit Charge 2 – Head to Head Comparison

Our BreakDown of how the two FitBit Trackers compare when it comes to design and comfort, compatibility, battery life, display size, premium features and more.

FitBit Alta HR VS FitBit Charge 2| Design

If we are to judge by how fine they look alone, the FitBit Alta HR beats the Charge 2 hands down there. The Charge 2 is like a fat older sibling and Alta HR is the hot and sexy little sister.

One thing is that for everyone who doesn’t like to wear big stuff on their wrists, the Charge 2 might look like a burden. It already looks like a rubber wristwatch. When whereas the new Alta HR has a slimmer profile. You can wear the Alta HR with cool outfits and still wear a watch on the same wrist without looking weird.

When I saw the Alta HR, I was excited to open it because of the sleeker picture. It is only 15mm wide. I mean it looks like a normal rubber wristband.

Aside this slimness, both FitBits are very similar in design. The other difference is in the button on the side of the Charge 2 that helps to know the side where the charger faces. It’s not present in the newer Alta HR. The Charge 2 has a stainless steel clasp that is not present on the Alta HR.

Both FitBits come with the sleek premium OLED black and white display, polished silver body and high quality straps which are swappable. There are several colors and materials of straps you can swap to make the device more fitting to your wrist.

If you are looking to buy the FitBit Alta HR, you can actually request for customisation. That is another impressive factor.

So the thing here is that if you like design and aesthetics, you may consider buying the Alta HR. But in terms of design, what the Charge 2 has over the Alta HR is its bigger screen. Bigger display screen allows you to navigate through the different functions of your fitness tracker easily. So if you think of that as a tradeoff, I have said that it’s a personal choice.

The Alta HR has no buttons at all. So everything on it is done by tapping on the touchscreen. The screen does need an extra tap to register each time you try. I guess this is to mark off inadvertent tapping. If you think this might frustrate you, you might prefer the Charge 2. The Charge 2 has a side button, and can also work with swiping the screen and tapping on it.

Both the Alta HR and Charge 2 are water resistant. This is not about you being able to swim or bathe with them on. The waterproofing works to deter sweat, splash and rain. If you are a swimmer, Fitbit Flex 2 is completely waterproof.

Fit-Bit Alta HR VS FitBit Charge 2| Premium Features

There are several features to look out for in a fitness tracker. The features you would love to see depends on your fitness goals and your kind of exercises. For instance, a cyclist or a hiker may find GPS feature useful on the fitness band. A jogger may find the cardio fitness checker handy. So let’s look at the different features on both these trackers.

Given this, they don’t have the same features. If we go by number count, FitBit Charge 2 has more features than Alta HR. If the feature you need isn’t in either, that could be a dealbreaker. Let’s see.

Connected GPS. This feature can only be found on the Charge 2. It is relay your phone’s GPS when you are running so that you would know the distance you have run. This feature is good for hikers or runners that need accurate data on distance. This feature is not available on the Alta HR.

– Workout/Relax Modes. These features use HR sensors to track guided breathing exercises. This feature is available only on the Charge 2.

– Cardio Fitness. The Alta HR now has the feature that helps in reading VO2 max. Although experts say that the reading may not be reliable.

– Heart rate monitor. The heart rate monitor allows gauges the intensity of your workout. This feature is available on both devices.

– Sleep tracking. Sleep tracking allows you to monitor the quality of your sleep through your pulse and breathing. Both Fitbit fitness trackers have this feature. This feature comes with heart rate data insights if you wear the tracker to sleep.

– Connection. Both devices use the Fitbit app and ecosystem along with graphs, dashboards, leaderboards and new features like Adventure challenges.

One feature I for one would love to find is for my fitness tracker to be used as a smart watch. Still, both Fitbit Charge 2 and FitBit Alta HR can relay your phone’s notifications. Notifications come over the Alta HR on a slant across the screen while as a clipped message on the Charge 2 screen. Both trackers also display caller ID when you are receiving a phone call with your phone nearby.

Fit-Bit Alta HR VS FitBit Charge 2| Battery Life

If you check their website and even in the manual, FitBit claims that the Charge 2 battery lasts up to five days while the new Alta HR is said to last for seven days. I guess the new flux is to sell the new model. True to the word on paper, the Charge 2 lasts up to five days with heavy usage and notifications. However, the FitBit Alta HR did not last up to the advertised seven days. We tried it twice and it died on the 6th day of heavy usage.

You can only make it to seven days if you are a light user. That is not to say the battery of Alta HR is not stronger than that of Charge 2, but the difference is not that significant.

Fit-Bit Alta HR VS FitBit Charge 2| Activity Tracking

Let’s talk about the main reason why we got the FitBits in the first place, activity tracking. As we used the Charge 2 on steps counting, the SmartTrack feature on the app is so amazing. Even though in some instances, the FitBit Charge 2 may slightly over-count steps, the SmartTrack feature automatically recognises the kind of activity you’re in. It triggers if you start running, cycling and or any other activities.

The PurePulse feature gives rates of your heart beat once the sensor has locked on. However, the Charge 2’s heart rate monitoring is not reliable when your exercise becomes intense.

In the FitBit Alta HR, steps counting is accurate if you take much steps daily. The resting heart rate throughout the day is accurate and works well if the activity is not intense.

Even though SmartTrack is on the Alta HR app as well, it does not automatically detect your activity. You have to start the app yourself. But it does the job perfectly.

Fit-Bit Alta HR VS FitBit Charge 2| Sleep Tracking

When it comes to sleep tracking, both FitBits work well. We even tested them side by side with another sleep tracker Beddit 3 and their readings were quite similar.

They both have Sleep Stages. This features uses the accelerometer and the heart rate sensor to detect light, deep and REM sleep. The app provides Sleep Insights every morning. Personalised tips to improve your sleep based on your sleeping habits.

FitBit Alta HR VS Fit-Bit Charge 2| Verdict

Do you think we will choose for you? Come on! I’ve earlier said that it is a personal issue. From this article, you have learned that both FitBit Alta HR and Charge 2 are all-round fitness trackers that will keep you on track to achieving your fitness goals.

Still, the tradeoff is in form or design and function. The Alta HR offers all the features Charge 2 brings except for workout modes and ConnectedGPS.

With the Alta HR, you can pretend and hide the fact that you are wearing a fitness tracker. It gives you the great aesthetic look and amazing features.

On the other hand, the Charge 2 is for the chilled weekend jogger, or the classic old-fashioned trainer. Pick whichever will make you happy. No one will wear your fitness tracker for you. Remember to tell your friends and share the link to this post with them. Cheers!
